Step by step Installation and Configuration of Windows Updates From Local Server 2003/2008 (WSUS/Windows Server Update Service)

Pre-Requisite for installation on a X64 Bit Windows Server Machine

For a normal installation of WSUS on a non x64 bit machine please download the non-x64 bit package when your downloading the .net framework version.
  1. Download WSUS 3.0 SP1 (as we needed WSUS to be installed on the Windows 2008 server, this is the only one that supports that particular OS version)
  2. Download ReportViewer
  3. Download SQL 2005 (if you already have sql installed please download this file)(this package is not mandatory).
  4. Download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x64)
  5. Download Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1 (for IT Professionals)
  6. IIS 7.0 role needs to be installed.

Click :- next


Select :- Full server installation including Administration Console, and Click Next.


Select :- I Accept on the terms of License Agreement, click on Next




Select the Checkbox "Store Updates Locally" and give the system Loction (it was recomended on some website while i was researching on this topic that if we are saving it on the Hard Drive then make sure that we have atleeast 20GB on that drive as free), Then Click Next.



Select :- "Install windows internal database on this computer" if you do not have SQL already installed on this system we can install the internal database (i would recommend to install the internal database), Then Click Next.


Select :- use the existing IIS default website (recommended), Then Click Next.


View the current settings and Click Next.

Click on Finish.




Windows Server Update Service Configuration Wizard






Click Next.


Donot Select anything, Just click Next.


Select :- "Synchronize from Microsoft Update. Click Next.


type the proxy server (if any) or else leave everything blank, Just Click Next.


Click on the button start connecting. Just Click Next.


Just select English (if you need some other regional language please select them at this point) and Click Next.


Select the products that you need updates for with Windows. Click Next


Select the Checkboxes for Critical updates, Definition Updates, Security Updates (if you need drivers or anything else please select it at this time). Click Next


Select :- "Select Manually" and just Click Next.


Select both the Checkboxes "Launch the windows server update service Administration Console" and "Begin initial Synchronization", and Click Next.


Just Click Finish to complete setup.

WSUS 3.0 SP1 is Currently Installed on a windows 2008 server.
2GB RAM, AMD 64 Bit Machine.
And currently updates all systems with windows on my network.

    i always support bloggers having their own style of writing, formatting, etc. but I'll share somethings I learnt over a few years of blogging myself. They are with regards to this article only.

    1. Instead of putting up all these images one below the other to a very very long article, make a slideshow with captions. Right now you can take a look at embedding a picasa picture slideshow or making a slideshow from slideshare.net or probably combine all images into a movie with your narration.

    2. blur identifying details on the images some more. what software do you use?

    3. good thing that you link to other posts on your blog.
